Human Zoos

The Human Zoo (also known as “ethnological exhibit”, “exposition of people” and “Negro village”) – once common in the West, a form of entertainment to the general public in the XIX – early XX century, the purpose of which was to show people from Asia and Africa in the natural and sometimes primitive savage state. Zoos were similar, especially in Germany, pronounced racist overtones, deriving currents of social Darwinism, where people from Africa are often exhibited next to monkeys to show their common origin.
